From New York Roots to Zen Craftsmanship

The Beginning: Building Roots in New York City
Zen Space Makers, also known as LoftBedsNYC, began with founder Sander Hicks, whose path has always mixed business, design, media, and construction. He started working in the trades back in 1996, balancing life as a building superintendent and independent publisher in the Lower East Side.

By 2013, Sander became a licensed contractor and went on to win two awards from the City of New York for his work and contributions to the local building community.

The Zen Connection
Sander’s philosophy of craftsmanship is deeply influenced by his Zen Buddhist practice. He is a member of both the Zen Studies Society and the 15th Street Monthly Meeting, Society of Friends.

His Dharma name, “Sho-An,” translates to “hands of peace.” It was given to him by Roshi Sherri Chayat, Abbot of Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a community that continues to inspire Zen Space Makers’ spirit of precision, calm, and kindness.

Since launching Zen Space Makers, the company has completed over 500 loft bed and custom furniture projects across New York City.

Giving Back and Continuing the Journey
Each summer, Sander hosts a peace retreat at Dai Bosatsu Zendo, welcoming anyone interested in reflection, nonviolence, and creativity. The retreat has become a natural extension of Zen Space Makers’ values — balance, mindfulness, and meaningful work.
