About Us, Our Beds, and Our Process.
Welcome to Zen Space Makers—where craftsmanship, creativity, and Zen-inspired design come together to transform small spaces into functional works of art.
It all started over a decade ago at Dai Bosatsu Zendo, where Zen practice became a foundation for clarity, creativity, and purpose. Today, our team at Loft Beds NYC is bringing that same mindfulness to custom loft beds, staircases, cabinetry, and interior design solutions that help New Yorkers maximize their space.
📌 What We Do:
✅ Custom-built loft beds, staircases & cabinetry
✅ High-end hardwood designs (walnut, oak, organic woods)
✅ Electrical, storage, and 3D space planning
✅ Home office setups, bookcases, and built-ins
✅ Large-scale projects, including housing development in NJ & PA
From luxury apartments in Gramercy to functional family spaces in Sunset Park, our work is all about combining smart design with beautiful craftsmanship. We’ve worked with incredible clients—including a former CEO of Amex—and are now expanding into larger housing projects that align with our values of sustainability and community building.
Sander Hicks and the gang at Zen Carpentry take on the creation of their biggest loftbed space, EVER! Interspersed with the wise teachings of the benevolent Zen master, Shinge Roshi Sherry Chayat.
Check out this custom Walnut Platform Bed from Zen Carpentry, built for a client in Sheepshead Bay. Crafted with solid walnut and walnut ply, this unique design features eight drawers, three built-in bookshelves, and even a dedicated space for an aquarium.
From French-inspired design ideas to functional storage solutions, this bed is a perfect blend of craftsmanship and innovation. Watch as Sander Hicks walks you through the elegant cabinetry, solid wood details, and custom finishes that make this platform bed a one-of-a-kind piece.

Hey, this is Sander Hicks from Zen Space Makers — and in this video, we take you behind the scenes of a full loft bed installation in a 114-year-old Brooklyn townhouse.
From opening up the ceiling and anchoring into century-old joists, to threading rods for perfect plumb alignment, to the final whitewashed finish — this is more than carpentry. It’s about design with integrity, respect for old structures, and creating modern, functional beauty in people’s homes.
We cover:
How to safely anchor and suspend a loft bed from a historic ceiling
Why precision joinery and ergonomic design matter for daily use
The philosophy behind our work: craftsmanship, strength, and timeless style
How a one-day install can transform a living space into something modern and inspiring
At Zen Space Makers, we believe in building with intention — making things strong, beautiful, and sustainable.
What happens when activists, artists, and seekers gather in a sacred space to heal, meditate, and confront injustice? This retreat wasn’t just about mindfulness—it was a laboratory for nonviolent revolution, intergenerational wisdom, and radical joy.
Hear firsthand stories from participants who found:
🔹 A sanctuary free from judgment—where coming as you are meant deep connection.
🔹 The fusion of intellect and spirit—how philosophy met action in the fight for justice.
🔹 The power of community—why laughter, improv, and home-cooked meals fueled transformation.
From Zen Buddhism to Alternatives to Violence, this was activism reimagined: a blueprint for staying whole in a broken world.
