For clients Jenny Zhang and Mack Kerker in Flatbush, Brooklyn, Zen Space Makers designed and built a unique loft that redefines how structure and artistry meet. The project features a spacious loft bed supported by three suspended rods from the ceiling, complemented by a handcrafted staircase with open cubbies and a live-edge accent that adds warmth and character.
The couple wanted to create an elevated sleeping and storage solution that felt sculptural yet functional. The challenge was to design something that would make the most of vertical space in a Brooklyn apartment while maintaining an open, airy feel in the living area.
To bring the vision to life, the Zen Space Makers team engineered a floating loft structure suspended from the ceiling with reinforced steel rods — creating both strength and lightness. The accompanying staircase doubles as storage, with open cubbies that blend utility and design. The live-edge finish brings organic warmth, balancing the modern geometry of the build.
The loft structure was built using solid hardwood and high-grade steel for suspension integrity. Each cubby step was carefully sanded and sealed to preserve natural grain, showcasing the Zen Space Makers dedication to tactile detail and longevity.
Achieving both safety and visual lightness was a key challenge. By integrating steel suspension rods with precision joinery, the team maintained structural integrity while allowing the loft to appear weightless — a true reflection of mindful design and technical mastery.
The finished space is both bold and serene. The suspended loft creates an architectural statement, while the natural materials and handcrafted finishes add calm and warmth. It’s a true example of Zen Space Makers’ philosophy: design that uplifts, simplifies, and endures.
