This custom build for David Golden’s family in Battery Park City transformed a shared bedroom for two sisters into a bright, functional, and joyful living space. The design combines creativity and practicality — featuring two loft beds with desks, cubby staircases, and clever storage throughout.

David wanted to give his daughters separate personal areas while maintaining a sense of togetherness. The challenge was to design a layout that fit two lofts comfortably in a New York apartment while keeping room for instruments and play.
To make the most of the vertical space, the team created two elevated beds with mirrored layouts, providing symmetry and privacy. The staircases were built extra thick to allow access from both sides — doubling as a storage solution and safety feature. A small baby closet was integrated beneath the stairs for added functionality.
Each loft was built using cabinet-grade plywood, finished to match the surrounding interior. The staircases and railings were engineered for solid stability, with meticulous joinery ensuring long-lasting strength — a hallmark of Zen Space Makers’ craftsmanship.
Designing twin lofts in a shared room required careful consideration of access, light, and spatial flow. By balancing both form and function, the team created a shared environment that still gives each child a personal sense of space.
The final result is a playful yet sophisticated room where design meets purpose. The family now enjoys a well-organized, multi-functional area — with space left over for a drum set and marimba — all within the peaceful aesthetic of Zen-inspired carpentry.
Sander and his team at Zen did a fabulous job making my vision a reality. I have a 14 and 11 year old and needed to create a room that would allow for them both to have their own space/privacy. We were able to take advantage of the high ceilings and create meaningful space below the beds for each of them to have a desk, storage area and dedicated personal space that was well lit. I really appreciate the thought and care that went into the design. Storage was created on each side with drawers and cubbies built into the steps, outlets (with usb c ports!) were added near each bed for easy charging and the steps came out extremely solid and easy for a child or adult to walk up and down. I also want to add that Sander really went the extra mile in the end to make sure everything was perfect. He was super receptive to constructive criticism on some minor issues and he ensured that the project was finished to completion within the time frame requested and within budget. It can be challenging to make a functional space for kids in city apartments, Zen made it look easy. Thank you!
